FAQ: Cars in Bali
Should I rent or buy a car in Bali?
Buying in your own name requires a stay permit: a KITAP, or a KITAS together with an SKTT (national police regulation Perpol 7/2021, art. 10, para. 6). Without one, you rent. In 2026 a new Toyota Avanza costs IDR 240 to 300 million, then IDR 2 to 3 million in annual tax; on our listings, the same model rents for IDR 350,000 a day.
Which licence do I need to drive a car?
An Indonesian SIM A, or your national licence valid for cars together with an International Driving Permit. A motorbike licence is not enough, and the reverse is true too: a car licence does not cover scooters. Driving without a valid licence carries up to 4 months in prison or a fine of up to IDR 1,000,000 (Law 22/2009, art. 281).
Which papers must be in the car?
The STNK, the registration card, which the driver shows at a police check (Law 22/2009, art. 106, para. 5); driving without it can cost up to IDR 500,000 (art. 288). The BPKB, the ownership book, stays with the owner. Check that the plate matches the card and that this year's tax is paid.
Are seat belts compulsory?
Yes, for the driver and the front passenger (Law 22/2009, art. 106, para. 6). The fine can reach IDR 250,000 (art. 289).
How do I pay safely?
In person, after seeing the car, its papers and the person renting or selling it. No transaction goes through Lokalfinds. Before any bank transfer, you can check whether the account has fraud reports against it on cekrekening.id, the portal run by Indonesia's digital ministry (Komdigi).
