FAQ: Surf & Boardsports in Bali
When is the surf season in Bali?
According to local surf guides, from April to October the south-east trade winds blow offshore on the west coast (Uluwatu, Kuta, Canggu, Balian). From November to March the wind turns, and the east-coast spots (Sanur, Nusa Dua, Keramas) get the cleanest conditions.
What board volume should a beginner choose?
The formula shapers use starts from body weight: beginner, weight in kg × 0.8 to 1.0 litres; intermediate, × 0.5 to 0.6; advanced, × 0.35 to 0.4. A 75 kg beginner therefore aims for 60 to 75 litres. The volume is usually printed on the board near the stringer, towards the tail.
What should I check on a used board?
Look at it in direct sunlight: dings, delamination, water marks under the resin, cracked fin boxes. Press gently around repairs: a soft spot often means water has got into the foam.
Where can I learn to surf?
Beginners start on sand-bottom waves such as Batu Bolong in Canggu or Kuta Beach. The reefs at Uluwatu, Padang Padang and Bingin are for experienced surfers. On this page, the schools are in Uluwatu, Seminyak and Legian, Sanur and Kuta; a private lesson is offered in Canggu.
How do I carry a board on a scooter?
With a side-mounted surf rack fitted to the scooter, especially for a long board. Two Lokalfinds listings offer custom-made racks.
