Frequently asked questions
With or without a driver: what is the difference?
Without a driver (“lepas kunci” in Indonesian listings), you drive yourself and must show a licence valid for cars. With a driver (“dengan sopir” or “+ sopir”), the rental company supplies the driver: ask in writing whether fuel, parking and hours beyond the day are included. On our listings, the with-driver offers are for large vehicles (Toyota Hiace, Fortuner, Alphard).
Which licence do I need to rent a car in Bali?
An Indonesian SIM A, or your national licence valid for cars together with an International Driving Permit, which only covers the categories on your national licence. Driving without a valid licence carries up to 4 months in prison or a fine of up to IDR 1,000,000 (Road Traffic Law 22/2009, art. 281).
What should I check when I pick up the car?
The STNK, the registration card, which stays in the car and must be shown at a police check (Law 22/2009, art. 106, para. 5), with an up-to-date validity date. Film the bodywork and tyres, note the fuel level, and get the deposit amount and what you pay after a scrape written down.
What fines apply at a police check?
Up to IDR 250,000 without a seat belt, compulsory for the driver and front passenger (art. 106, para. 6, and art. 289), up to IDR 500,000 without the STNK (art. 288) and up to IDR 1,000,000 without a valid licence (art. 281). These are ceilings set by Law 22/2009; the actual amount is decided case by case.
Should I leave my passport as a deposit?
Better not: an immigration officer can ask a foreigner to show their passport or stay permit (Immigration Law 6/2011, art. 71). Offer a copy and a cash deposit instead, with the amount and refund conditions in writing.
