Which licence do I need to ride a scooter in Bali?
A licence from your country that is valid for motorcycles, together with an International Driving Permit, or an Indonesian SIM C. Riding without a valid licence is punishable by up to 4 months in jail or a fine of up to IDR 1,000,000 (Traffic Law 22/2009, art. 281), and an insurer may refuse to cover an accident.
Is a helmet mandatory?
Yes, for the rider and the passenger, and it must meet the Indonesian national standard, SNI (Law 22/2009, art. 106(8)). The fine is up to IDR 250,000 (art. 291). Ask the renter for one helmet per person, in your size.
Which papers must come with a rented scooter?
The STNK, the registration card, which you must show at a police check (art. 106(5)); riding without it can cost up to IDR 500,000 (art. 288). Check that the plate and frame number match the card and that the yearly tax is paid. The BPKB, the ownership book, stays with the owner.
Should I leave my passport as a deposit?
Better not: an immigration officer can ask a foreigner to show their passport or stay permit (Immigration Law 6/2011, art. 71). Offer a copy and a cash deposit instead, with the amount and return conditions in writing, and film the scooter when you pick it up.
