Why check the IMEI of a used phone?
According to the official FAQ of Indonesian customs (Bea Cukai), a device brought in from abroad and used with an Indonesian SIM card gets network access for 90 days at most, and its IMEI must be registered within 60 days of arrival. Dial *#06# to show the IMEI, compare it with the box, and ask for proof of registration or an invoice from a seller in Indonesia.
Are laptops affected?
No. IMEI registration covers phones, cellular handheld computers and cellular tablets. A laptop, a camera or a tablet without a cellular module falls under the general rules for personal effects.
How much does registering an imported phone cost?
Registration itself is free. What you pay is duty: 10% customs duty and 11% effective VAT, after a USD 500 allowance per passenger, provided the proof is produced no later than 5 days after arrival. The final amount is set by the customs officer after inspecting the device.
Official or international warranty?
Trade Ministry Regulation 38/2019 requires a warranty card in Indonesian for electronic products sold new in Indonesia. A device bought abroad may not be covered by local service centres: ask the seller what warranty is left and where it can be used.
What does used tech cost?
From prices recorded in Indonesia in July 2026, a used 128 GB iPhone 15 sells for IDR 9 to 10 million, against IDR 12,499,000 new, and a MacBook Air M1 for IDR 6 to 9 million. IMEI registration, local warranty and battery health move the price.
