Frequently asked questions
What are the rules for e-bikes in Bali?
Transport Ministry Regulation 45/2020 sets a minimum age of 12, compulsory helmets and a top speed of 25 km/h; according to the traffic police (Korlantas), riders aged 12 to 15 must be accompanied by an adult. E-bikes are ridden in bike lanes and in specific areas: residential streets, car-free roads, tourist and office areas.
What equipment must a bicycle have?
Transport Ministry Regulation 59/2020 on cyclist safety lists seven items: mudguards, bell, brakes, lights, a red rear reflector, white or yellow wheel reflectors and pedals. Mudguards are not required on racing and mountain bikes; lights and reflectors are required at night, in heavy rain or in poor visibility.
Do I need a licence to rent a bike?
Not for an ordinary bicycle: the licence requirement in Law 22/2009 (art. 77) covers motor vehicles. For an e-bike, the rules of Regulation 45/2020 apply (age, helmet, speed, permitted lanes).
What should I check before riding off?
Brakes, tyre pressure, saddle height and frame size, lights if you will ride after dark, and a lock. Get it in writing whether the price is per day, per week or per month, and how much the deposit is.
