With a KITAS, buying overtakes renting somewhere between 9 and 18 months, resale not counted: 9 months if you are handing over 1,400,000 IDR of rent today, 18 months if you only pay 700,000. Without a KITAS or a KITAP you cannot register a scooter in your own name; a nominee arrangement costs 1,000,000 to 3,000,000 IDR a year and pushes the break-even out to 10–29 months. The numbers behind that, read in July 2026: a common used scooter — a Honda Vario or a Scoopy in decent shape — trades at 9 to 14 million IDR, plus 495,000 IDR of official name-change fees (balik nama, January 2026 scale); renting the same machine runs 700,000 to 1,400,000 IDR a month, twice as much from one published price list to the next. What tips the decision, then, is not the price of the scooter. It is the rent you stop paying, your immigration status, and what you eventually sell it for.
What does renting actually cost? Three price lists that never agree
Let's get this out of the way first: there is no reference price for scooter rental in Bali. The three most detailed public price lists (all three from French-language expat guides, hence the domain names) never agree, with gaps of up to 100% on the same model.

| Model | indonesie-tourisme.fr (19 December 2025) | lemondesurmesure.fr (6 July 2025) | coucoulemonde.com (updated 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Honda Scoopy 110 | 1.2–1.4M IDR/month | 0.8–1.2M IDR/month | 0.7–1.0M IDR/month ("standard" rate) |
| Honda Vario 160 | 1.8–2.0M IDR/month | — | — |
| Yamaha NMAX 155 | 2.4–2.7M IDR/month | 1.5–2.0M IDR/month | +20 to +30% over the standard rate |
| Yamaha XMAX 250 | 3.5–4.0M IDR/month | 2.5–3.5M ("premium models") | — |
Visa agency Bali Visa puts an eight-year-old scooter at around 1,000,000 IDR a month — the middle of the grids above — and a recent NMAX at around 3,000,000 IDR a month, more than the priciest line in the table. Three variables explain the spread:
- The channel: street renter 50,000–80,000 IDR/day, professional agency 150,000–300,000, hotel 100,000–200,000.
- The age: an eight-year-old Scoopy and a recent Vario 160 are not the same product.
- The commitment: from 10 days on, a negotiated weekly or monthly rate saves up to 40% of the total cost (lemondesurmesure.fr).
A telling detail: the two rental outfits that market themselves as the monthly specialists in 2026 (Bali Bike House, Bikago) publish no price list at all, the first pointing you explicitly to whatever is in the yard that day. The only figure you can trust will be the quotes you collect yourself.
Then come the extras, and they weigh a lot: optional insurance at 30,000–80,000 IDR a day, which is 900,000 to 2,400,000 IDR over thirty days and, at the top of the range, more than the rent itself; a deposit of 100 to 300 EUR at a professional agency; delivery 50,000–100,000 IDR. On the electric side, Espot Bali advertises 2.8M IDR a month for a Super Soco TC or TS and 4.8M for a TC Max — big-petrol-bike money.

What does buying actually cost?
Used: 9 to 14 million IDR, plus a 5 to 20% foreigner markup
According to Bali Visa, popular models in good condition — Vario, Scoopy — are worth 9,000,000 to 14,000,000 IDR; another article from the same publisher widens the range to 8,000,000 to 15,000,000 IDR (500 to 1,000 USD) for the used market as a whole. Those figures come from a single commercial publisher and date from 2025. Take them as an order of magnitude, never as a valuation: there is no Balinese blue book for two-wheelers.
The same publisher puts the foreigner markup at 5 to 20%, with examples to match:
- A well-worn Vario: 11,000,000 IDR at the local price, 13 to 14 million quoted to a foreigner.
- A 2021 Scoopy in good condition: 13,500,000 IDR asked of a foreigner against 11.5 to 12 million at the local price, deal closed at 12,000,000 IDR with an Indonesian friend in the room.
Bringing an Indonesian along costs 200,000 to 400,000 IDR. Set against a 1.5 to 2 million swing on the asking price, it is the best value-for-money call in the whole exercise. Before you go and look, read up on the classic traps of buying a used scooter in Bali: documents and chassis numbers get checked before the money changes hands, not after.
New: 27 to 41 million IDR, registration included, in Denpasar
OTR prices (on the road, registration included) read on 22 July 2026 on the two big aggregators:
| Model / variant | oto.com (22 July 2026) | zigwheels (July 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Honda Vario 160 CBS | 26.98M IDR | 28.10M IDR |
| Honda Vario 160 ABS | 30.06M IDR | 30.98M IDR |
| Honda PCX 160 CBS | 30.94M IDR | — |
| Honda PCX 160 RoadSync | 40.95M IDR | — |
| Yamaha NMAX Standard | 29.75M IDR | 31.62M IDR |
| Yamaha NMAX S | 32.26M IDR | 33.18M IDR |
The two aggregators sit 3 to 6% apart and neither of them is the manufacturer: treat these as an opening range, to be confirmed at the dealership (Vario 160 price list for Denpasar, oto.com).
Their finance calculators change the nature of the sum. For a Vario 160 CBS at 26,980,000 IDR: 20% down, so 5,396,000 IDR, then 707,475 IDR a month over 36 months — 30,865,100 IDR all in, 14.4% more than paying cash. Yet that monthly figure stays below the rent on a plain used Scoopy in every price list read here, the 700,000 IDR floor excepted, and after three years the machine is yours. One large caveat: no source documents whether a foreign resident can get that credit at all.
The costs nobody puts in the budget
The name change is the first bill to land after the purchase. Official rates since January 2026 according to Kompas Otomotif, based on PP 60/2016 and Perpol 7/2021:
| Item (motorcycle) | Official amount, January 2026 |
|---|---|
| PNBP mutasi masuk (incoming transfer levy) | 150,000 IDR |
| STNK issuance | 60,000 IDR |
| BPKB issuance | 225,000 IDR |
| Number plate (TNKB) | 60,000 IDR |
| Cek fisik (chassis/engine check) | compulsory; no fee on the scale |
| Total transfer fees | 495,000 IDR |
| PKB (vehicle tax) + SWDKLLJ (Jasa Raharja insurance) | not included, worked out at the Samsat counter |
That last line is the one that builds the real bill: the scale says nothing about the tax, and the tax is what swells the total at the counter. A case reported by bali.live in Badung in July 2024 came to 3,250,000 IDR — but on a car, which does not transfer to a two-wheeler, except as a reminder that the official tariff is never the total.
Three documents make a clean transaction: the BPKB (ownership book issued by the police), the STNK (registration certificate) and proof of an up-to-date PKB. The official Korlantas Polri site is a reminder that the STNK runs for 5 years and that every renewal means a fresh cek fisik. The procedures are set out step by step in our guide to vehicle papers in Bali.
On the annual tax, by contrast, no usable official source: Bapenda Bali publishes no accessible scale. Expat guides talk about "roughly 1.5 to 2% of the estimated value per year"; another quotes 500,000 to 2,000,000 IDR of "taxes and registration fees", without ever saying what that covers. Applied to a 12-million scooter, that rate would give 180,000 to 240,000 IDR a year — a community estimate, in no way an official rate. Only the Samsat counter settles it.

The lock that decides everything: do you have a KITAS?
Before any calculation, a legal question. According to Bali Visa (11 December 2025), a foreigner can register a vehicle in his own name if he holds a KITAS or a KITAP. Documents required: passport, stay permit and surat keterangan domisili, the proof of address issued by the banjar or by the manager of the residence. A visitor on a tourist visa cannot appear as the owner on the BPKB: renting is all that is open to him. Expat.or.id confirms it independently: no ITAS, no ITAP, no legal ownership of a vehicle in Indonesia, and the common workaround becomes buying in the name of the company that employs you.
Hence the nominee arrangement: BPKB and STNK made out in an Indonesian's name, backed by his ID card (KTP), for 1,000,000 to 3,000,000 IDR a year. Two warnings. First, you are not the legal owner of a machine you are paying for in full. Second, leaving the registration in the seller's name — a practice expat.or.id documents while making clear it does not encourage it — only defers the problem: it comes back at resale, at a police check, or after a crash. So check your status before you run a single number: our guide to KITAS and long-stay visas in Bali goes through the options.
How many months before buying pays off? The calculation
No source publishes that threshold. So it has to be worked out, with the assumptions on the table.
- Used Vario or Scoopy in good condition: 12,000,000 IDR — the price actually agreed in the one documented transaction, inside the 9–14M range — plus 495,000 IDR of balik nama, so 12,495,000 IDR to get in.
- Estimated annual tax: 240,000 IDR/year, or 20,000 IDR a month (top end of the 2% estimate, unofficial).
- Servicing, tyres, battery, insurance: not quantified, no reliable source. On a rental those costs sit with the owner, not with you: the real break-even therefore arrives a little later than the one shown here.
- Fuel: neutral, paid either way. For the record, a full tank costs 20,000 to 30,000 IDR at a Pertamina station for a claimed 100 to 150 km, against 15,000 IDR a litre from a roadside jerrycan.
| Monthly rent avoided | With a KITAS | Nominee at 1M IDR/year | Nominee at 3M IDR/year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,400,000 IDR (top of the priciest list) | ~9 months | ~10 months | ~11 months |
| 1,100,000 IDR (mid-range) | ~12 months | ~13 months | ~15 months |
| 800,000 IDR (bottom of the middle list) | ~16 months | ~18 months | ~24 months |
| 700,000 IDR (the lowest published price) | ~18 months | ~21 months | ~29 months |
In other words, the break-even is not one number but a 9-to-29-month range. At 1,400,000 IDR of rent with a KITAS, a scooter bought for 12 million pays for itself in nine months; at 700,000 IDR with an expensive nominee, it takes the best part of two and a half years. The dial moves with the rent you stop paying, not with the price of the scooter.
What resale does to the numbers
A scooter you buy is not money burned: you get part of it back by selling before you fly out. But no source consulted publishes a depreciation curve for Bali: the resale rates below are working assumptions, not market readings.
| Resale after 12 months | Net cost | Monthly equivalent | Gain against 12 months rented at 1.1M IDR (13.2M) |
|---|---|---|---|
| No resale (theft, write-off) | 12.74M IDR | 1,061,000 IDR/month | +0.5M IDR |
| 50% of the purchase price (6M IDR) | 6.74M IDR | 561,000 IDR/month | +6.5M IDR |
| 70% of the purchase price (8.4M IDR) | 4.34M IDR | 361,000 IDR/month | +8.9M IDR |
Even if the scooter goes up in smoke after a year, buying still breaks even against a mid-range rental. And it is the quality of the resale that makes the result, which puts the paperwork right back at the centre: a scooter whose BPKB and STNK stayed in the seller's name is harder to sell, and sells for less. Private listings remain the only place to watch a real price; our 5 tips for selling fast apply as they stand to a two-wheeler.
"A year of rental equals a new scooter": true or false?
The line, repeated by Bali Visa, rests on a new NMAX at around 45 million IDR, a figure incompatible with the OTR prices read in Denpasar in July 2026 (29.75 to 33.18 million). Let's redo the sum over twelve months of rental:
- Top price list, 2.4 to 2.7M a month → 28.8 to 32.4M IDR: the price of a new NMAX Standard. The line holds.
- Bottom price list, 1.5 to 2.0M a month → 18 to 24M IDR, or 57 to 81% of new. It does not.
- Bali Visa's own estimate, ~3M a month → 36M IDR, 14 to 21% more than a new NMAX OTR.
Verdict: the line holds for an NMAX rented at the top rate, collapses at the bottom rate — and never on the strength of the 45 million it is supposed to rest on.

How to decide in five minutes
- Under 9 months on the island: rent, unless you are certain you can sell fast and sell well. Resale aside, no assumption tested here makes buying pay over that stretch, and you spare yourself the transfer, the tax and a panic sale the night before your flight.
- 9 to 18 months with a KITAS: it all comes down to the rent you are paying today. Go back to the table above: the break-even is 9 months at 1,400,000 IDR, 12 months at 1,100,000, 18 months at 700,000.
- More than 18 months with a KITAS: buy. Buying wins under every assumption tested, including against the lowest rent on record.
- No KITAS: rent, unless you are willing to take on a nominee, its annual cost and the fact that you are not the legal owner of your own machine.
- In every case: negotiate a monthly rate from 10 days on, take an Indonesian with you to buy, demand the BPKB before you pay, and think about resale from day one.
Frequently asked questions
How many months does it take for buying a scooter to pay off in Bali?
Between 9 and 18 months with a KITAS: a used machine at 12,000,000 IDR plus 495,000 IDR of transfer fees, against a rental of 700,000 to 1,400,000 IDR a month. Without a KITAS, a nominee (1 to 3 million a year) pushes the break-even out to 10–29 months. In both cases, reselling shortens that further.
Can a foreigner buy a scooter in his own name in Indonesia?
Yes, provided he holds a KITAS or a KITAP. Documents required: passport, stay permit and surat keterangan domisili, the proof of address issued by the banjar. A visitor on a tourist visa cannot be the registered owner on the BPKB: he can only rent, or go through a nominee.
How much does a motorcycle name change (balik nama) cost?
The official fees since January 2026 come to 495,000 IDR for a two-wheeler: 150,000 IDR of incoming-transfer PNBP, 60,000 for the STNK, 225,000 for the BPKB, 60,000 for the plate. The cek fisik is compulsory but carries no listed fee. The vehicle tax (PKB) and the Jasa Raharja contribution are added at the Samsat counter.
How much does it cost to rent a scooter by the month in Bali in 2026?
The published price lists run from 700,000 to 1,400,000 IDR a month for a Honda Scoopy 110, and from 1,500,000 to 2,700,000 IDR for a Yamaha NMAX 155. The spread comes down to the channel (street, agency, hotel), the age of the machine and how long you commit for: get three quotes.
What does a new scooter cost in Denpasar?
Readings from 22 July 2026 on the Indonesian aggregators, OTR prices: Honda Vario 160 CBS from 26.98 to 28.10 million IDR, Yamaha NMAX Standard from 29.75 to 31.62 million, Honda PCX 160 CBS 30.94 million, PCX 160 RoadSync 40.95 million. They diverge by 3 to 6%: confirm at the dealership.
How much is the annual tax on a scooter in Bali?
No usable official source: Bapenda Bali publishes no accessible scale. Expat guides put it at roughly 1.5 to 2% of the estimated value per year, so 180,000 to 240,000 IDR for a 12-million scooter. Have the real figure confirmed at the Samsat counter.
Is it better to buy a scooter on credit or in cash?
The calculators show 707,475 IDR a month over 36 months for a Vario 160 CBS with 20% down, which is 14.4% more than cash over the full term. That instalment still sits below almost every rent on record, and the machine belongs to you after three years. No source, on the other hand, documents whether a foreign resident can access that credit.
