Sending a child to an international school in Bali in 2026 costs, in annual tuition alone, from ~45 million rupiah (around 2,800 USD) for a progressive kindergarten like Pelangi or Sunrise, to ~330 million IDR (around 20,000 USD) for a high-school year at an IB or premium "eco" school such as Green School or Bali Island School. In between, most of the big international schools — IB, British/Cambridge, Australian — charge 100 to 270 M IDR/year depending on the level. And beware: on top of tuition, almost every school adds easily forgotten extra fees — registration (2 to 40 M), an infrastructure capital levy (13 to 29 M) and a refundable security deposit. The reference currency is the IDR (a local legal requirement); dollar equivalents are only indicative. Finally, the real bottleneck isn't always price: for popular year groups, waitlists in Canggu can exceed six months, to the point of dictating… your choice of villa.

How to read these figures

Every price in this article comes from the official fee schedules published by the schools themselves (fees pages, PDFs, rate-card images), consulted in early July 2026 — never from a third-party aggregator. Seven of the eight priced schools publish their fees for the 2026-2027 school year; Pelangi has so far only published 2025-2026, and The British School of Bali's schedule is still marked "draft". These amounts are therefore the fees published by each school for 2026-27, subject to change: always reconfirm before committing.

One crucial point: "tuition" is not "the real cost of the first year". The table below compares annual tuition only. On top of that, almost every school adds a registration fee, an infrastructure capital/development levy, a resource levy for materials and a security deposit — detailed school by school below. Dollar equivalents are indicative (rate of about 16,300 IDR/USD, summer 2026).

Green School Bali — the "eco" benchmark near Ubud

Set in the jungle of Abiansemal, Green School is the island's most iconic school: bamboo campus, experiential and sustainable pedagogy, from Pre-K to Grade 12. It is also one of the most expensive. Annual tuition for 2026-27 runs from 185,445,400 IDR in Pre-K to 328,600,900 IDR in Grade 11-12. On top of that, budget 40 M IDR in admission fees for a new student (4 M application + 36 M registration, non-refundable), a refundable deposit of 30 M/child, and a mandatory "Local Scholar" levy of 8.5 M/year per family. High school adds another 7.25 M (service trips). Good to know: paying by semester costs 3% more, by term 8% more, and sibling discounts range from −5% (2nd child) to −15% (4th).

Bali Island School — the IB continuum in Sanur

In Sanur, Bali Island School (BIS) is a CIS/WASC-accredited IB World School running the full continuum — PYP, MYP then Diploma — from age 3 to 18. Its 2026-27 schedule is shown all-inclusive (tuition + Capital Levy): from 76,850,000 IDR in half-day Preschool to 330,265,000 IDR in Grade 11-12. Tuition alone runs from ~55 M to ~302 M, with the Capital Levy adding 22 to 28.5 M depending on level. Extra fees: application 2.5 M, registration 15 M/year (which secures the place and is deducted from tuition). Discounts are generous: siblings up to −20% for a 4th child, early full-year payment before 11 April 2026 −5%, and a multi-year commitment −8% with a fee freeze. Grade 12 Diploma exams are billed separately (IDR equivalent of about 185 USD per exam).

Canggu Community School — IB in the heart of Canggu

Canggu Community School (CCS), in Tibubeneng, teaches in English/British style through middle school then switches to the IB Diploma in Years 12-13. It's the go-to "international" choice for families based in Canggu. Tuition 2026-27: from 117,000,000 IDR in Early Years to 272,000,000 IDR in the IB Diploma. Extras to plan for: application 2.5 M, registration 17 M (first child) or 14 M (sibling), a Capital Levy of 21.5 M (through Year 5) to 26 M (Year 6-13), a Materials Levy of 8.5 to 13.5 M, and a refundable deposit of 25 M to 50 M depending on entry level. Discounts: siblings 3 to 10%, annual payment −5%.

AIS Bali — the Australian curriculum in Denpasar

In Denpasar, the Australian Independent School (AIS Bali) follows the Australian (New South Wales) curriculum, from Early Years to Year 12. It's one of the more affordable entry points into the premium tier: mainstream tuition from 75,930,000 IDR in Early Years (full-time) to 190,720,000 IDR in Year 11-12 — and from ~45.6 M for a 3-days-a-week toddler option. Watch the extras, which are many: a one-time Capital Levy of 20 M (Foundation) to 50 M (Year 9-12), an annual Material & Resources Levy of 6.4 to 12.8 M, a non-refundable application 2 M and registration 5 M, plus a refundable 5 M deposit. English support (EAL) and the bus (40 M/year) are billed on top. Payment can be annual, semesterly or termly — the total "payable" rises as you split it.

ProEd Global School — Cambridge across two campuses (Umalas & Nuanu)

ProEd Global School offers the British/Cambridge curriculum on two sites: Umalas (Nursery → Year 13) and the new Nuanu campus (Nursery → Year 11). Tuition 2026-27 at Umalas: from 92,400,000 IDR (Nursery) to 202,650,000 IDR (Year 9-13); at Nuanu, up to 213,150,000 IDR in Year 10-11. ProEd also runs a "Toward Independence" pathway for special needs (up to ~220.5 M). Fees common to both campuses: one-time registration 11,025,000 IDR, a Development Levy of 13.125 M (through Year 6) to 15.75 M (Year 7+), a Material Levy of 15.225 M and a Wellbeing Levy of 5.25 M. Support (1-on-1 assistant 105 M/year, EAL 21 M, IEP 26.25 M) is extra. Discounts: annual payment −5%, existing family −7%, siblings −5%.

The British School of Bali — British, a young school near Ubud

Opened in September 2025 within a resort in Tegallalang (near Ubud), The British School of Bali (BSB) applies the British EYFS framework for children aged 2 to 11, with an extension planned up to Year 7. Its 2026-27 schedule (still marked "draft", so to be reconfirmed) shows annual tuition from 230,000,000 IDR (Nursery, Reception) to 240,000,000 IDR (Year 1 to Year 6), the annual rate already including a 5% early-payment discount. Year 7 remains provisional for 2026-27 (270 M), its opening depending on demand. One-time fees: application 4 M, enrolment 30 M per family (non-refundable, confirms the place). Tuition includes supplies and materials; lunches (10 M/term) are extra.

Sunrise School Bali — inquiry-based in Canggu (mind the "per-term" price)

In Canggu, Sunrise School runs the international IEYC/IPC/IMYC programmes (inquiry-based learning), from toddlers (Small World) to Year 9. The trap to avoid: the school lists its tuition per term, and there are four terms a year. Annualised, tuition for 2026-27 runs from 49,000,000 IDR (Small World half-day: 12.25 M × 4) to 124,000,000 IDR (Year 7-9: 31 M × 4). The annual Resource Levy is on top (6.5 to 21.25 M depending on level), plus a 10 M registration for a new student. Note of caution: at Sunrise, all payments are non-refundable.

Pelangi School — progressive and bilingual in Ubud

In Mas, near Ubud, Pelangi School is a progressive, bilingual school that places children by date of birth (following the local Diknas standard), from Tiny Tots to Class 8. Its latest published official schedule is 2025-2026 (no 2026-27 yet at the time of writing): all-inclusive annual fees from 45,080,000 IDR (Tiny Tots half-day) to 116,725,000 IDR (Middle Class 8). At enrolment: registration 500,000 IDR, then a 15 M enrolment fee for a new student on acceptance, and a refundable 10 M deposit. Along with Sunrise, it's one of the gentlest entry points on the market for kindergarten and primary.

The "fees on request" schools

Three notable schools do not publish a usable schedule online: their fees are provided on request, and we publish no unofficial figure here.

  • Dyatmika School (Denpasar) — a bilingual school combining the Indonesian national curriculum (Kurikulum Merdeka) with Cambridge IGCSE / AS / A Level, from Play Group to Class 12. Fees published only via an official document on request — see dyatmika.org.
  • Sanur Independent School (Sanur) — 2026-27 fees shared via an official folder on request (the site's fee-structure page).
  • Montessori School Bali (Canggu) — Montessori pedagogy from preschool to secondary, open since 1998; the site publishes no fees, and admission goes through a direct enquiry. (A separate Montessori ERDKINDER school also exists in Bali, likewise without public fees.)

Be wary of the ranges circulating on school directories: those are third-party aggregators, not official sources. For these three schools, one rule only: ask the school directly.

Admissions and waitlists: the real timeline

The main intake is in August — that's when the most places open. Many schools also offer a January entry (second semester), and places free up during the year as expat families move on. The advice that comes up everywhere: apply 6 to 9 months ahead of your move. Once the application is under way, the process (visit or video call → file → sometimes an admissions test → offer → confirmation deposit) usually takes 2 to 4 weeks.

The factor not to underestimate is the waitlists, very real for popular year groups (Early Years and primary especially). In the Canggu area, some schools have shown waitlists of over six months for certain levels. A late application can end in a "level full" — forcing you to change area, and therefore housing. Precise dates and deadlines vary from school to school and should be confirmed one by one (Bali Island School, for instance, set its Registration Fee deadline at 13 March 2026 and its early-payment discount at 11 April 2026).

How to choose: curriculum, area, budget

Curriculum first. If your family is mobile and will change countries again, prioritise portability: the IB (Bali Island School, CCS) and Cambridge (ProEd, BSB) are recognised worldwide and make transfers easier. The Australian curriculum (AIS) speaks mainly to families tied to Oceania. Progressive pedagogies (Green School, Pelangi, Sunrise) appeal to those seeking an alternative educational project, centred on experience and child development rather than exams.

Area next. Schools cluster by district: Canggu (CCS, Sunrise, ProEd Umalas), Ubud (Green School, Pelangi, BSB), Sanur (Bali Island School), Denpasar (AIS, Dyatmika). Since daily commutes add up fast on a traffic-heavy island, families often choose where to live based on the school — not the other way round.

Real budget last. Never look at tuition alone: add registration + capital levy + deposit to know the real cost of the first year — a gap that quickly runs into tens of millions of IDR. Factor in discounts too (sibling, annual or early payment, multi-year), which can trim the bill by 5 to 20%.

Choose the school before the villa

It's the smartest logistical move in Bali: lock in the school, then find housing nearby. Given the waitlists and dense traffic, doing it the other way round often leads to endless daily school runs. Once the school is chosen, target your rental in the right area: the Real estate category on Lokalfinds gathers villas and houses posted by individuals and agencies in the expat community, filterable by neighbourhood and budget. And for everything you need to set up as a family (furniture, strollers, bikes, baby gear), the Family & kids category is the right starting point.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an international school in Bali cost in 2026?

In annual tuition, expect from ~45 M IDR (about 2,800 USD) for a progressive kindergarten like Pelangi or Sunrise, to ~330 M IDR (about 20,000 USD) for a high-school year at an IB or premium eco school (Bali Island School, Green School). Most big international schools charge 100 to 270 M IDR/year depending on level. Always add the extra fees (registration, levies, deposit) to get the real first-year cost.

Which is the cheapest international school in Bali?

Among schools with an official schedule, Pelangi School (Ubud) and Sunrise School (Canggu) offer the most affordable entry points, around 45 to 49 M IDR/year for the youngest children. AIS Bali also has part-time kindergarten options from ~46 M IDR/year. These amounts apply to the youngest levels; they rise steadily as the child grows.

What are the hidden fees on top of tuition?

Tuition is only part of the bill. Almost every school adds: a one-time registration fee (from 2 M at AIS to 40 M at Green School), an infrastructure capital or development levy (13 to 29 M), a resource/material levy for materials, and often a refundable security deposit. English support (EAL), the bus and lunches are usually billed on top.

IB, British or Australian: which curriculum should I choose?

For a family that moves often, the IB (Bali Island School, CCS) and Cambridge (ProEd, BSB) offer the best international portability. The Australian curriculum (AIS) suits families tied to Oceania. Progressive pedagogies (Green School, Pelangi, Sunrise) suit families after an alternative, more experiential educational project. The right choice depends on the family's future mobility and the child's profile.

Should tuition be paid in rupiah or dollars?

In Indonesian rupiah (IDR): it's the currency required by local law, and all official schedules are denominated that way. The dollar equivalents you'll see (including in this article) are only indicative, calculated at a rate of about 16,300 IDR/USD in summer 2026. The amount actually billed depends on the day's rate: recalculate before paying.

When should I apply for a school in Bali?

The recurring advice is to apply 6 to 9 months ahead of your move. The main intake is in August, often with a possible January entry. Once the application is under way, the full process (visit, file, possible test, offer, deposit) usually takes 2 to 4 weeks. The earlier you start, the better your chances of securing a place at the right level.

Are there waitlists at Bali schools?

Yes, and they are real for popular year groups (Early Years and primary). In the Canggu area, some schools have shown waitlists of over six months for certain levels. A late application can mean a full level and force you to change area — which is why it's worth choosing the school before renting your home.
